Update 1/9/07

Destin Snowbird Club

 Happy New Year to all our Friends and Snowbirds!  A special welcome to all you newly arrived "Birds".  May you have a warm (compared to up North) and  a very enjoyable time with us.

Well, we had a big day on Tuesday, registering 794 members for this season in just three hours.  Our total membership for this year is surpassing that of last year on this date.

Registration at the "Roost" at the Destin Community Center on Stahlman Ave. is conducted from 1 to 3 pm on Mondays and from 10 am to noon  on Wednesdays.  From 10 to noon on Wednesdays, you may also have your Blood Pressure taken by our volunteer staff.  Please take note that Monday, Jan 15, is Martin Luther King Day and the Destin Community Center is closed on that day.

We have two meetings every Tuesday to accommodate all our members.  The first meeting is at 8:30 am and the second, at 11 am.  Our next scheduled meetings will be on Jan 9 and we will enjoy the music of Michael J. Thomas on the sax and Jabbo on the keyboard.

At these meetings you may buy tickets for our various events and reserve your bus seats for the Biloxi casino trips which leave every Friday morning.

The Friendship Club meets for lunch every Tuesday and  on Jan 9, they will be at O'Charley's at 12:30 pm.  They will also meet for "Fun & Games" from 7 to 9 pm  on Sat, Jan 13, at the American Legion.  If you would like to know more, please call Carol Young at 654-9189.

The sign up date for the next regular golf scramble to be held at Eglin will be from 1 - 4 pm on Tuesday, Jan 9, at the Destin Community Center.  So be sure to come back after the meetings, or stay,  and  get to play on the hilliest course in the area.  Great fun.

At 2 pm every Thursday, you will find our Pinochle players enjoying the game at their room at the Community Center.  If Pinochle is your game, join them.  Edgel Grimm is handling this game and you can reach him at 424-4367.

Euchre players will commence playing at 7 pm on Tuesday, Jan 9, at the Destin Community Center.  Clay and Judith Smith have agreed to chair this and you may reach them at 650-4423.

Bridge this winter will be at 7 pm on Tuesday and will be held at Gulf Terrace.  Please call Ron DeLuca at 650-9808 if this is your game.

It is not too late to join our Bowling teams even though they started playing on Friday.  This is a joint activity with members of the South Walton Snowbird Club.  This activity begins at 1 pm every Friday afternoon at the White Sands Bowling facility on Beal Parkway in FWB and continues for eight  weeks for $7 per week.  Contact Connie Clark at 837-2614 if you have any questions.

We have another party coming up.  The annual Mixer, theme this year Pirates, will be from  2 - 5 pm on Sat. Jan 20 at the American Legion post  on Main St.

This is our only afternoon party and is also a costume contest with prizes.  We will have "Jim & Mike" for dancing,  local favorites.  Tickets are on sale now.

Come, have fun and meet new friends.

On the Bulletin Board, you will find a sign up sheet for a writing workshop.

The subject is "Writing Your Memories" and is designed to give you pointers on jogging your memories of  past experiences and putting them on paper.  This is a 90 minute, one day only workshop and we must know how many are interested to plan the time and place.  There is no charge and this will be conducted by a published and well known Atlanta author.  Give your grandchildren something to remember.

We now have a Tennis group who play whenever and wherever and if you would like to join them, please call Jim Boehlert at 654-8625 for the time and the place.

Fishermen, see Ford Sims or call him at 654-7138, and he can tell you how they are biting and make the arrangements for a day on the Gulf.

Alice DeLuca at 650-9808 is the person to notify if you know of anyone who is in need of cheering or sympathy.  She takes care of  our "Cheers & Tears" function.

Visit the web site at www.destinsnowbirds.4t.com , check out the photos, the calendar and latest news.

Have a wonderful winter with us here in Destin.

1/1/07

Attention all Snowbirds in the Destin area. It is time to join the Destin Snowbird Club for a winter of busy and enjoyable days by taking part in our activities.

Tuesday, Jan 2, is the day to come to the "Roost" at the Destin Community Center and become an active member. We'll be there from 1 - 4 pm to make you welcome, answer your questions and sign you up for a place in our leagues.

Come and renew old friendships. Those of you who have already registered for this year should come too. This is the last date to sign up for the new 9-Hole Golf League at Shalimar which starts on Jan 4 and also to sign up for the next regular golf scramble at Sandestin Baytowne to be played on Jan 3. Sign up also for Bowling, Tennis, the Casino bus trips and much more. Everything will be in full swing this first week of January so come on down and don't miss out!

For those new to the area, the Destin Community Center is on Stahlman Ave. This is off Rt. 98 at the foot of the Destin Bridge. You can't miss the big white building with the blue roof. The "Destin" area runs from this bridge to, and including, the Tops'l Resort.

Because we will be devoting all of Tuesday, Jan 2, to registering all our new incoming "birds", there will not be a meeting. The next meeting will be on Tues, Jan 9. There will be two meetings - one at 8:30 am and another at 11 am. The entertainment scheduled will be Michael J. Thomas and Jabbo. Come and enjoy the music, learn what is upcoming and just maybe win a door prize.

The Storage Lockers will be open on Sat., Jan 6, from 8 to 9:30 am. If you have any questions, please call Brian Walsh at 837-4466.

We have been offered to take part in a free one-day workshop in January on "Writing Your Memories". Designed to jog your memory, this 90 minute session will show you how to create your own tales from the past. This workshop is conducted by Gail Pallotta, a well known and recognized author from Atlanta. In order for final arrangements to be made we need to know how many would like to participate. A sign up sheet will be on the bulletin board for those interested. Write your memories for your grandchildren.

The schedule for the first week of January is as follows:

* Jan 2 - Registration and sign-ups 1 - 4 pm

* Jan 3 - Registration 10 - noon

Golf Scramble at Sandestin Baytowne - 9 am

Blood Pressures - 10 - noon

* Jan 4 - 9-Hole Golf League at Shalimar come at 12:30 pm

* Jan 5 - Bus trip to Biloxi Casino - 6:15 am

* Jan 6 - Storage Lockers - open 8 - 9:30 am

Refer to your Activity Sheet for what and when. Read the Saturday Destin Log and Walton Sun and the Sunday Daily News. There is something for everyone.

For Banjorama Fans

Rusty and Jabbo are returning with their Wednesday entertainment to Yesterday's, at the Hurricane Lane Entertainment Center, on January 3 from 4 to 7 pm.  The good times are back.  As long as we attend, they will be there every Wednesday, so come on down and enjoy the show!

Three officers make up Board. At the end of the season we elect a new 3rd and the others move up.

The meetings are held every Tuesday morning at the Destin Community Center, 101 Stahlman Avenue. Destin Snowbird Club History

Destin Snowbird Club, Inc.

The Destin Snowbird Club was started during the winter of 1973 -1974. "Red" Lyon and his wife, Virginia were spending their first winter of retirement in Destin and organized a small group of visitors and new Florida residents for potluck dinners and other activities. The first year they had 90 members but by 1978 there were 278 members and finding facilities for this large group was difficult but they managed.

In April of 1979 the club filed papers for incorporation as a non-profit club and officially became the Destin Snowbird Club, Inc. The first By-Laws were written setting up a five person board. There were many activities: card games, trips to the Dog races, fishing and sunset cruises, parties, golf scrambles, bowling league and a Par 3 Golf League and at the Tuesday morning meetings there was entertainment

A committee was formed in February of 1986 and the By-Laws were amended from a five member board to a seven member board. The board consists of : President, 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, 3rd Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Publicity. Each Vice President was responsible for certain of the activities. Membership grew rapidly and when it reached
1300 in '85-'86 it was necessary to hold two meetings every Tuesday morning during January, February and March at the Fort Walton Beach Municipal Auditorium.

During the early years of the Club, we had a large percentage of Canadians enrolled, but that has changed so that Americans make up the larger percentage of the membership. The membership has grown to 2500 - 2700 members in the last few years We have 14 - 16 different activities organized and are open for anything new. Because of the large membership, many of our members volunteer to help and at the end of the season are recognized by a party given in their honor..

Some of the early members are still with us and we have become a "family" with friendships that have lasted for years. We all look forward to our reunion in the winter season. Some of us have become residents and go north for a month or so during the summer season but are happy to return to Destin and our Snowbird Club family.

The club has made donations to local charitable organizations through the years and purchased needed articles for the Destin Community Center which became our "Roost", headquarters in the "93-"94 season and remains there.
