Snowbirds will enjoy the ultimate golfing experience from tee to green and then after the round at renovated Marcus Pointe Golf Club in Pensacola.
The course, located on 600 acres of natural beauty on rolling woodlands, was recently upgraded and the results are stunning with new greens, expanded fairways and lush grasses.
Recently, the 18-hole course, designed by Earl Stone, closed for two months to resurface all 18 greens and the practice putting green. The irrigation system around each putting green was updated to allow Marcus Pointe to more accurately control the amount of water applied to each green. The new irrigation system also reduced water waste, electricity costs and will help the club meet the requirements of water consumption use regulated by the State of Florida.
The greens renovation process began with a two-week process removing the existing Tift Dwarf Bermuda grass from the putting surface. The maintenance staff of Marcus Pointe, led by Head Superintendent Steve Earlywine then monitored the grow-in process until the turf was fully established.
“We reestablished the putting greens with a new Bermuda called J-1,” Earlywine said. “This will not affect winter play due to our overseeding practices. We will continue to have beautiful green putting surfaces, smooth ball roll and challenging green speeds. The course is in excellent shape and the new greens are putting great, thanks to the great weather conditions Mother Nature has blessed us with this winter.”
The footprint and existing acreage of the greens remained the same and but some greens underwent a change in undulation to make play more enjoyable.
The decision to redo the greens was simple. They were more than 20 years old since the course opened in 1990. And some Snowbirds who have already tried the course are extremely happy with it.
Michael Glandt has been coming down from Wisconsin each winter since the mid-1990s. What started as a group of six couples coming down for a week is now 11 or 12 couples staying for up to a month.
“Over the years Marcus Pointe has provided us with the most enjoyable rounds we have experienced,” Glandt said. “It is the very friendly staff, the course conditions and the overall ambiance of the whole experience that attracts us to Marcus Pointe. It has become our spring home course. Most of us play at least 60 percent of our rounds at Marcus Pointe.”
While the course closed, new forward ladies tees were added, knocking off 700 yards, to make the course more player-friendly for female golfers. Additionally, the maintenance crew widened some of the fairways to make the course more forgiving.
Cart paths were repaired, new sand was added to the bunkers and the drainage work on the course was updated to allow the course to drain better after it rains and improving the quality of the turf.
Prices start at $28 and there is a 4-rounds-for-$125 coupon for any day after 10 a.m.
Beverage service is available on course and it’s not just hoping it will show up. When staff sees heavy play, they send out more beverage carts. There’s also a full-service pro shop and a driving range and putting green.
Another neat feature at Marcus Pointe is the outdoor grill for hot dogs and hamburgers as golfers head toward the back nine.
