The Buffet is kicking off its monthly focuses on Global Cuisine starting in March with the countries Italy and Mexico. The Mississippi Gulf Coast’s longstanding PGA TOUR Champions event returns to MGM Resorts International’s Fallen Oak March 19-25 as the 2018 Rapiscan Systems Classic.The newly-named Rapiscan Systems Classic signed a three-year agreement and Fallen Oak, the Tom Fazio-designed Mississippi masterpiece, is ready to welcome back the legends of the game.
“We’re excited to have the PGA TOUR Champions event back at Fallen Oak for the next three years,” said Fallen Oak Director of Golf Rick Gehr. “Whenever you combine the legends of the game and a premier facility like Fallen Oak you create a memorable week for our staff, as well as the gulf coast community. The three-year commitment by Rapiscan Systems, along with the many contributing sponsors, will help continue the great charitable works that comes from this event.”
Fallen Oak is one of only two courses built by MGM Resorts International for its guests, joining the heralded Shadow Creek in Las Vegas, Nevada. The legendary Tom Fazio designed golf course was structured around the idea of preserving the natural landscape of the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
The Rapiscan Systems Classic will be the third PGA TOUR-sanctioned event to be held annually in Mississippi, joining the PGA TOUR’s Sanderson Farms Championship and the Web.com Tour’s North Mississippi Classic. Mississippi is one of just five states to host an annual tournament on all three Tours. The purse for the Rapiscan Systems Classic is $1.6 million ($240,000 to winner) and 78 PGA TOUR Champions players will compete in the three-day, 54-hole stroke play competition. Each year, the tournament puts the Mississippi Gulf Coast in the national spotlight with three days of coverage on the Golf Channel.
Over the past eight years, the annual PGA TOUR Champions tournament at Fallen Oak has been one of the most exciting stops on the schedule, producing champions such as Tom Lehman (2011), World Golf Hall of Fame member Fred Couples (2012), David Frost (2015) and Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez, who successfully defended his 2016 title to shoot -13 in 2017.
